This past year, the Cathedral of Santiago has agreed to grant a Compostela to pilgrims who complete the 75 km Camino Ingles route from A Coruña to Santiago, if they have already completed a certified 25 km pilgrimage in their country of origin. Camino Society Ireland has now undertaken the task of defining authentic pilgrim routes (listed below) within Ireland. The Society has named the 25 km walked in Ireland with the 75 km walked from A Coruna, the “Celtic Camino”.

To promote the “Celtic Camino” we are hosting a Celtic Camino Festival in Westport, Co. Mayo from April 13th – 15th 2018. This promises to be a ground-breaking event with appearances from:

John Brierley – a pilgrim pioneer who has made pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela countless times. He is the author of the most popular Camino guidebooks, which are both practical and mystical.

John Rafferty – (who under the name Johnnie Walker) is one of the most prominent names associated with the Camino to Santiago. Ever since moving to Santiago de Compostela, Johnnie has taken an active role in re-shaping the English-speaking pilgrim’s experience in the city.

Dr Bernadette Cunningham – an historian specialising in medieval and early modern Ireland. She is Deputy Librarian at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin.  She has walked the Camino from Espalion in France, and  from Porto in Portugal. Her  book on Medieval Irish Pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela is due for publication in Winter 2018

Celtic Camino Pilgrimage – 25 km  walk of the Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail, receiving a Celtic Camino Compostela on completion!

Visit Ballintubber Abbey – Visiting the beautiful Ballintubber Abbey for a pilgrims Mass on this Celtic Camino route!

The Camino Voyage – A full length feature film by Dónal Ó Céilleachair. A crew including a Writer, two Musicians, an Artist and a Stonemason embark on the Camino, not on land, but by sea, in a traditional boat that they built themselves on an inspiring, and often time’s dangerous, 2,500km modern day Celtic Odyssey.
